BOOT CAMP at The Teleport in Staten Island NY Draws Raves

Over 60 executives attended March's BOOT CAMP @ TELEHOUSE Center and upon leaving had positive comments about the entire concept.

"The last boot camp was the best yet I've attended. The companies profiled and the knowledge of the presenters were top notch. It was good for us also because I met with vendors that are now in a position to meet our service needs. Keep up the good work TELEHOUSE." (Frank-Charles Osafo, EVP/CTO, Patrina Corporation).

"The boot camp of 3/31 was great. The presentations were informative and the networking was excellent. I personally made 4 new contacts with whom I feel I will be doing business with in the near future. I look forward to attending the next TELEHOUSE BOOT CAMP, they have proved more than worth my investment of time. Thank you again." (Andrew Weitzberg, EVP, Brae Group Inc.)

"It is impossible for anyone to stay current with all technology developments, particularly in the telecomm world. Because I attended the 'Enterprise Network Security and New Dark Fiber BOOT CAMP' sponsored by TELEHOUSE, I now understand the physics of DWDM, Internet 2 networks and National Lambda Rail, and the huge advantages this technology brings to many sectors. It is great to know that a responsive and cost-effective solution is now possible." (Kathleen Lucey, President, Montague Technology Management, Inc.)

"I like to share my feelings with you regarding your BOOT CAMP last week. Bravo, Its about time somebody had a meeting where the different presenters didn't promote just their companies, but created interest by informing. If meetings are going to be like this, just count me in, since you always can learn. Thanks again." (Frank Lieberman, President, IBC Worldwide Ltd.)

The day's definition of network security was insuring the protection of the enterprise network from instances that threaten the continuity of voice, data and content flow essential to business operations.

CIBER's opening presentation pointed out the big picture approach needed to tackle IT initiatives and specifically network security in its entirety. "It is essential to focus on and think through the entire solution from a business and technology impact, not just on a particular technology, however solid they are," said Tony Ferrigno, Vice President of Sales and Strategy for CIBER. Enterprise owners must evaluate the areas impacted and identify the possibilities to lower costs and risk while increasing value and manageability. Using a methodology that delineates assessments, implementations, and management coupled with communication and project management, lessens risks, adds flexibility, and accelerate deliverables. The resulting solutions should move the enterprise forward in the right direction. CIBER presentation

OCG voiced opinions on the downsides of "old fiber" presently in use, then commented on present generation optical fiber. It offers higher speed capability, notably less packet loss, superior capacity, ease of multiplexing, and higher operations and cost efficiencies. Waves, an alternative to dark fiber network ownership, give increased flexibility, lack costly infrastructure support and maintenance, and provide the capacity to handle day-to-day needs. OCG used their new underground dark fiber network to illustrate key points. OCG presentation

ADVA Optical Networking discussed bandwidth and applications' changing landscape. The enterprise network faces dramatic increases in data storage and bandwidth capacity needs, while concurrently meeting the demands of regulated industry sectors requiring same day recovery of critical functions. In response large corporations created their own solution - owning and operating their own high capacity dark fiber network to control efficiency, stability and costs. Greater bandwidth produces less down and backup time. Today's WDM solutions simplify bandwidth adjustments. And they reduce recovery times using one pair of optical fibers. ADVA and IBM's jointly developed "Geographically Dispersed Parallel Sysplex™" solved distance issues. As for bandwidth's future, it lies in Internet2. I2 is tomorrow's Internet. ADVA presentation

IBM smoothly segued from ADVA's presentation into the essentials of securing a critical end point – the remote site and its continuity. Providing continuity calls for high availability, continuous operations and disaster recovery to protect critical business data, operations after a disaster, provide predictable recovery and reliability, and keep costs predictable and manageable. IBM presented what it learned from past experience about IT survival tactics for remote sites. The talk also touched on the importance of considering the business and cost impact of synchronous vs. asynchronous remote copying, short vs. long distance, and the demands of rapid database availability measured in minutes and data transmission costs. IBM's remote disk copy techniques such as global and metro mirror and global copy were brought up in support throughout the talk. IBM presentation

WW AboveNet & SIEDC Draw B'kfast On B'way Full House; Akamai Hosts April
AboveNet's MaryBeth Nance discussed the growing significance of available alternative fiber network routes relative to carrier consolidations. Enterprise owners, especially in regulated sectors, should be reviewing their network diversity status now to insure compliance with federal regulations. A new option for diversity and bypassing Manhattan is the new fiber and carrier presence in Staten Island and New Jersey. When asked about those moving to bypass Manhattan, Nance pointed to accelerated movement by financials. AboveNet's dcXchange product helped illustrate a new means to satisfy LEC bypass redundancy obligations in metro areas. AboveNet Presentation

SIEDC's Jay Anderson brought his expertise on government programs to the seminar. He pointed out the wide selection of municipal / state-backed initiatives, how to obtain them, and how they offset operating expenses. Anderson advised researching government programs, and then seek out those providing assistance or services in the planning, technical, real estate, business development zone tax breaks, incentives and abatements, and local networking areas. Then examine the opportunities presented by zoning, population growth, an area's industry profile, and how it matches up to your goals. As a prime example of a key telecom, continuity and disaster recovery hub opportunity outside of Manhattan, Anderson singled out the tremendous upside of the Port Authority's corporate communications park – The Teleport.
