Telehouse News Waves Vol: 2 Issue: 8 IX Exchanges Expand @ TELEHOUSE ===================================================================== TELEHOUSE's NYIIX & LAIIX Show Gains in 2005 2005 brought growth in traffic volume and membership at NYIIX and LAIIX. Traffic at the NYIIX is now at 12Gbps, with peak traffic hitting 16Gbps. By adding a new remote peering switch at 111 Eighth Avenue, NYIIX members, just shy of 80, now benefit from a triple node providing public and private peering switches and a seamless fabric connecting 25 Broadway, 60 Hudson Street and 111 Eighth Avenue with a redundant 10GigE interface - new this year. Now, 200-plus companies at 25B are able to extend their peering options by connecting with more than 200 enterprise and carrier customers at 111 8th as well as over 200 at 60 Hudson. LAIIX at 626 Wilshire grew steadily too. It now has traffic volume of 1Gbps. Membership, which grew by 27% this year, benefits from the dark fiber connection to the One Wilshire Boulevard building in Los Angeles. New Relationships with AMS-IX and LINX AMS-IX - The Amsterdam Internet Exchange and LINX - The London Internet Exchange are the two pre-eminent exchanges in Europe. NYIIX and LAIIX have recently formed agreements to work jointly with AMS-IX and LINX respectively. Members and customers of all four exchanges will be able to take advantage of new peering opportunities, to expand their reach, and to grow their global networks. AMS-IX has over 200 connected parties and lays claim to the highest volume of peering parties at one exchange. LINX has over 90 percent of the internet traffic exchanges between ISPs in the UK go through its equipment. They have 190-plus members. http://www.telehouse.com/Services.html?Id=4 ===================================================================== SIP-IX Services and NYIIX & LAIIX Another key development in 2005 at NYIIX and LAIIX had to do with SIP-IX. NYIIX & LAIIX are in the process of delivering SIP-IX services. These services will enable direct network-to-network peering between members for voice, video and content services using SIP-based technologies i.e. IP Multimedia Services (IMS) and VoIP. A number of questions centered on China Internetworking and brought out a number of points. Internet usage within China is growing quickly and bandwidth speed is at respectable levels, given the traffic generated. And there are ample access routes from various points in Asia to get to China quickly and efficiently. However, the movement of data over the Internet is significantly curtailed at the access points on the Chinese mainland. The filters put in place by the government to monitor incoming and outgoing traffic drives the latency factor dramatically upward. Different approaches to improving performance were voiced; all having a common element - greater financial exposure. Pointed out was that MPLS, which offers better security, easier manageability and has the expansive capabilities needed to handle the merging voice and data will replace frame relays. In a spirited discussion of MPLS’ value-proposition, the audience learned that a full implementation of MPLS is three to five years away. Only Fortune 500 companies have the financial capacity to install and support the new system, leaving the SMB market, constituting 60-70% of the market, to wait until overall costs reach more reasonable levels. VoIP’s direct relationship with MPLS, as well as VoIP’s disaster recovery ramifications, also was illustrated. Once again the correlation between need and budget and staffing were at the center of the conversation. http://www.telehouse.com/index.php?id=116 ===================================================================== Managing Networks and Enterprises Requires Firm Controls If you are running a network or enterprise within a regulated space, it is critical to have firm controls in place. One option is the proprietary IT management protocol called Good System PracticeTM. It was created by Court Square Data Group by enhancing the elements of the Information Technology Infrastructure Library framework and discussed at the November BREAKFAST ON BROADWAY seminar. http://www.telehouse.com/vuploads/CourtSqPresents.pdf ===================================================================== BREAKFAST ON BROADWAY Kicks Off 2006 on 1-19 This month's seminar focuses on podcasting. According to Forrester Research podcasting should have 12.3 million listeners by 2010. Learn about what is needed to podcast, how it compares to other methods of delivering media content over the network, and its overall impact on the Internet. Globix's media services unit will lead a presentation-discussion about these topics. They will bring their expertise in hosting and distribution and the ability to leverage 1,200 peering agreements to deliver podcasts and other audio-video broadcasts. http://www.ersvp.com/r/event4602 ===================================================================== Industry Waves NEW YEAR WAVES.....the News Waves team wishes all of our readers a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous 2006!!! http://www.telehouse.com/index.php?id=116 ===================================================================== ===================================================================== To Visit the Telehouse Website please use the following URL http://www.telehouse.com Telehouse is a registered trademark of TELEHOUSE America
