GLOSSARY OF TECHNOLOGY TERMS

Business Continuity: a holistic view of planning and ensuring all areas of an organization’s operations remain available and accessible on a daily basis through any potential disruption.

Carrier: a telecommunications service provider that operates and manages network connections for voice, data and Internet bandwidth services.

Colocation: sharing a multi-tenant data center facility’s space, power, cooling and telecommunications infrastructure resources among organizations that wish to house their IT infrastructure systems and network equipment servers (computers, routers, firewalls, etc.) securely and reliably with little to no interruption in service, coupled with access to multiple diverse telecommunications carriers and/or Internet Service Providers to provide continuous voice, data and internet network capacity.

Data Center a facility designed to securely and reliably house IT infrastructure equipment, systems and data, often includes redundant cooling, power, fire, water, and back-up systems to ensure maximum uptime. Facilities can also include multiple levels of security measures including CCTV, biometrics, card access, and 24x7 security personnel to ensure added protection.

Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Planning: A combined set of plans, processes and information identified, collected and commonly accessible to enable the timely restoration of a organization’s operations when interrupted by rare or common perils or malfunctions, environmental or personnel changes. This is typically associated with back up IT infrastructure with data storage and retrieval systems, as well as the use of multiple communication systems in the event of a routine service interruption or disaster; the goal is to ensure all critical business processes and systems remain seamlessly operating or recover quickly when subject to unplanned or unpredictable interruptions or crisis.

Global Interlink: an ultra fast Ethernet IP interconnection between TELEHOUSE New York, London and Paris sites offering connectivity on a secure global platform.

IP Transit: the paid interconnection of separate Internet networks (ISPs) allowing data and voice traffic from their downstream customers to reach and be exchanged between ISPs; a paid service priced per megabit per second (mbps) per month that often includes agreements to ensure availability and performance.

Managed IT services: TELEHOUSE's brand for comprehensive IT management service solutions including help desk and hardware support, remote hands, system monitoring and remediation, managed IT infrastructure, network development and management, security and compliance services, data storage and recovery, application support, database design, support and management, all provided by a team of certified experts and consultants delivered seamlessly both inside and outside our facilities.

Modular Data Center: is a portable, secured, structure or 'module' that can be built anywhere in the world to support business' data center needs. The module is often a container or semi permanent structure that acts as an alternative to the traditional data center facility. The data center modules can be shipped all over the world and housed inside an existing building, added to a data center footprint or grouped together to create an independent data center unit.

Network Consultings: services provided by a third party, a Network Consulting or outsourced network management approach allows clients to offload tasks associated with the architecture, creation, maintenance, security and resource acquisition management of an organization's physical communications and network operations. Network Consulting encompasses many management services but often reduces costs by removing the ‘ownership’ of technical expertise, operational processes and scalability to a third party. A network consulting service can be retained as a permanent resource to enhance and improve your IT infrastructure as your business evolves and your technology needs change. Some of the benefits include controlled expenses, sharpened focus on core business, improved network performance and a positive impact on business operations.

Peering: the settlement free, voluntary exchange of internet traffic. Peering is the physical interconnection of separate Internet networks via a Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) for the purpose of exchanging traffic between the customers of each network. Internet Service Providers (ISP's) who typically benefit from large, mainstream internet traffic will opt to 'Peer' with small/medium sized businesses to access niche, regional traffic. Small/medium sized businesses benefit by accessing the mainstreaming traffic and saving money.

Ping Monitoring: A basic monitoring service for data processing and network equipment, processes and capabilities that identifies and reports on their continued proper operation and functionality within defined parameters.

Redundant Cooling multiple cooling systems to ensure seamless continuous operations in the event one cooling system experiences a service interruption or outage. Can include Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning systems, Computer Room Air Handler units, and Chillers, cooling towers.

Redundant Fiber: multiple fiber connections to ensure seamless communications in the event one fiber connection is threatened or experiences an outage.

Tape Back-Up:  includes management of backing up tapes and other media including mounting of tape drives, running back-up processes according to customized schedules, along with shipping and receiving media from storage facilities.

Telecommunications: is the mechanism used to communicate and transmit information over significant distances. Telecommunication devices have evolved over time from initial visual signals like smoke signals and semaphore telegraphic as a means of primitive communication. Now, with the advent of electricity, telecommunication devices are more complex and include electrical devices like telegraphs, telephones and computers.

Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS): backup power generation systems and devices that automatically provide electricity seamlessly and instantaneously during a commercial power interruption or outage. Typically used to support critical equipment and systems demanding high availability communications, networks, and information systems.
